Important Tips for Medical Practitioners
-
Dosing is Unique: Botox units are not equivalent to units of other neuromodulators (e.g., Dysport, Jeuveau). Adhere strictly to Botox-specific dosing guidelines. A common error is over-treating when practitioners use conversion ratios from other products.
-
Precision in Reconstitution: Use only sterile, preservative-free 0.9% sodium chloride. The standard 1.25 mL (for 4 units/0.1mL) or 2.5 mL (for 2 units/0.1mL) dilutions are most common. Consistency in your dilution practice is key to predictable outcomes.
-
Localized Effect: Botox Cosmetic is characterized by more localized diffusion. This allows for precise targeting but may require more injection points for broader areas like the forehead to ensure even, smooth results.
-
Storage Protocol: Store unopened vials in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Once reconstituted, the manufacturer recommends use within 24 hours when stored refrigerated, though some studies support longer stability. Follow a conservative, office-specific protocol.
-
Master the Consultation: Conduct a dynamic facial assessment with the patient animating. Tailor your plan based on muscle mass, desired movement retention, and asymmetry. Always discuss the risk of ptosis, especially with frontalis treatments, and obtain comprehensive informed consent.
